Physical Education

During Key Stage 1 pupils build on their natural enthusiasm for movement, using it to explore and learn about their world. They start to work and play with other pupils in pairs and small groups. By watching, listening and experimenting, they develop their skills in movement and coordination, and enjoy expressing and testing themselves in a variety of situations.

Our PE Intent is:

To know how to keep physically, emotionally and mentally healthy and active.

To be confident to explore and develop new skills.

To enjoy being active in a range of ways.

To be able to work independently and in groups.

To know it is ok to succeed and ok to find something hard.

To persevere if something is tricky.

To be happy for others if they succeed.

To know how to respect others and play fairly.

At Manor Leas Infant School we aim to provide children with a range of activities within their PE lessons, covering dance, gymnastics and games. We give children opportunities to develop fundamental movement skills in a range of different situations, both individually and working against others in fun, competitive and non-competitive ways.

When teaching PE we aim to ensure children become confident in:

Acquiring and developing skills

Selecting and applying skills

Evaluating and improving performance

Developing a greater knowledge and understanding of fitness and health

Our curriculum includes:

Dance

Gymnastics

Games

Outdoor/garden school activities

Adventurous activities, such as clip and climb and orienteering

Mindfulness, including mediation and yoga

Get Set For PE

At our school we have chosen to follow the 'Get Set For PE' scheme of learning. The scheme fully addresses all aspects of the EYFS and KS1 curriculum requirements in an engaging and progressive way. Children are taught key knowledge and skills in isolation and they then apply them in games activities (such as target, net and wall, striking and fielding and invasion) with increased pressure, rules and decision making.

Continuing Professional Development

The PE and Sport Premium is designed to help schools improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils. At Manor Leas Infant School, we have chosen to invest in a specialist coach through Premier Education, who will deliver high quality sports sessions to every child in the school throughout the year. Children also have the opportunity to experience unique sports such as fencing and archery, as part of our enhanced PE provision. The specialist coach also supports our staff team by developing their subject knowledge and practice and ensuring high-quality continued professional development.

Extra Curricular Provision

We provide a variety of sports and activities during lunchtimes and after school. Some run throughout the whole year and others are seasonal. Typical clubs include: Tennis, Multi skills, Street Dance, Sports Club and Lunch Time Positive Play.

We also provide enrichment opportunities such as Health and Well-being Days, Performing Arts Days, Dance Workshops and visits from athletes to inspire a love of being active!
