Art and Design

During Key Stage 1 pupils develop their creativity and imagination by exploring the visual, tactile and sensory qualities of materials and processes.  They develop their understanding of  Art and Design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space. Pupils will learn to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products. They will use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and shair their ideas, experiences and imagination.  Pupils in Key Stage 1 will learn about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines whilst making links to their own work.

Our Art and Design intent

At Manor Leas Infant School we aim to provide the children with a variety of opportunities to develop and extend their skills and knowledge and allow them the opportunity to express their own individual creativity. We aim for our children to be enthusiastic, creative and feel confident in their own artistic skills and knowledge. Our Art and Design curriculum is designed to be accessed by all children with the focus being on developing key skills such as fine motor development, using materials and resources and learning through hands-on activities and first-hand experiences. Our curriculum also enables children to learn about the work of other artists and to have a good understanding of the processes and resources used for painting, drawing and sculpting.

Our aims are:

  • To produce creative work, exploring their own ideas and drawing on the ideas of artists.
  • To become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpting and other techniques.
  • To analyse and evaluate other artists work and apply their techniques in their own works of Art and Design.
  • To know about famous artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
