Expressive Arts and Design
We encourage children to be imaginative and creative through regular opportunities to make models, paint, role play and story-telling. We introduce a range of media and materials which the children are taught to access independently. It is essential that children are able to explore and play with these resources and therefore the ‘process’ is valued as much as the ‘product’. We encourage children to value, talk about and interpret their own work and that of others including their peers.
ELG: Creating with Materials
Children at the expected level of development will:
- Safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function;
- Share their creations, explaining the process they have used;
- Make use of props and materials when role playing characters in narratives and stories.
ELG: Being Imaginative and Expressive
Children at the expected level of development will:
- Invent, adapt and recount narratives and stories with peers and their teacher;
- Sing a range of well-known nursery rhymes and songs; Perform songs, rhymes, poems and stories with others, and – when appropriate – try to move in time with music.
What do the children think?
"I love painting. We painted colour
monsters. I did a pink one" - EYFS pupil
"I like painting funny faces and pictures.
I painted a blue monster because blue is
my favourite colour.. also...we have been
learning how to make rockets!!" - EYFS pupil
What have we learnt so far this year?
The children have been learning about their new classroom and all of the resources. They have learnt where things go and how to look after our resources.
The children have been developing their fine motor skills through daily funky fingers activities.
The children have explored using paint by painting self-portraits and colour monsters. They have also developed their cutting skills by cutting out colour monsters and making their own buckets linking to the story "Have you filled a bucket today?"
Children have developed ways of sharing and expressing their ideas through talking, drawing and creating with materials. They have learnt how to use resources such as felt tip pens, glue sticks, scissors, sellotape, string and paint. Children have expressed their imagination and creativity through drawing, painting, making and role-play.
