Manor Leas Infant School

Introduction to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

At Manor Leas Infant School we strive to make every child feel confident, happy, safe and to love learning. Our EYFS curriculum aims to recognise children’s prior learning, experiences and various starting points. We recognise that all children are unique and therefore our curriculum promotes children’s interests and provides them with the opportunity to follow their imagination and creativity. We encourage children to learn in a practical, hands-on way where our outdoor classroom is just as important as the indoor space. We recognise that children learn in many different ways and seek to discover how our children learn best and celebrate this. Alongside this we also aim to encourage children to develop new skills and concepts in areas of the classroom they may be less confident using.

Our aims are to:

  • Work in partnership with our parents and carers to promote independent, confident and enthusiastic learners who thrive in school and are encouraged to meet their full potential.
  • Plan for our children’s interests and provide opportunities throughout our EYFS curriculum to support learning, consolidate and deepen knowledge and encourage children to meet their next steps.
  • Provide our children with a wide range of rich, first hand experiences to take the curriculum beyond the classroom.
  • Foster the development of each child’s character, personal development, health and wellbeing which will prepare them to make a valuable contribution to society.
  • Provide purposeful, enticing and well planned indoor and outdoor environments which supports learning in all areas of the curriculum.
  • Prepare children to reach the Early Learning goals at the end of the Foundation Stage and provide children with the skills and attitudes they need to succeed throughout their education.

The staff record evidence of each child’s learning and experiences through Tapestry learning journal, which is a private and secure online site. Parents can see updates of their child’s learning, comment on it and also add experiences of learning that have occurred at home, which encourages home/school partnership. At the end of the EYFS year each child will receive a report on their progress over the year in the areas listed below. They will be given an attainment level (emerging or expected) in each area. The "expected" level is where a child is expected to be working at. A child that is "emerging" has not yet reached the expected level and staff will be putting additional support in place to support them.

The children learn through the three prime areas; Communication and Language (CL), Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) and Physical Development (PD) and the four specific areas Literacy (Lit), Maths (M), Understanding the World (UW) and Expressive Arts and Design (EAD).

The following pages expand on what is taught in each of the areas. Should you have any further questions please don't hesitate to ask a member of staff.
